Most patients with ?-cell tumors haveincreased insulin, C-peptide and proinsulin concentrations, but occasionallyonly proinsulin is elevated. Despite its low biological activity, proinsulin maybe increased sufficiently to produce hypoglycemia. Increased proinsulinconcentrations may also be detected in patients with renal failure, cirrhosis orhyperthyroidism.
